Next week, Mercedes Benz is going to reveal its new 2009 Mercedes Benz S-Class ESF Concept, a showcase of modern safety technology. AutoCar calls this concept as Mercedes Benz’s first Experimental Safety Vehicle since 1974. Based on the S400 Hybrid, the ESF Concept features a whole lot of safety features, primary of which are air bags.
One of the most innovative safety air bags equipped in this vehicle is an air bag-emergency brake. It’s a very unique system located under the car, designed to inflate when the radar detects collision in 0.6 seconds. Once the air bag inflates, it creates friction with the road and helps decelerate the car, all while lifting the car’s front by about 80 millimeters to compensate for brake dive. Now, who would ever think of something like that? It’s truly one of a kind.
Aside from the concept’s main feature, it also includes the following innovations:
a. Airbags in between the seats (drops from the ceiling to prevent head knocking during a crash)
b. Airbags in the seatbelt
c. Inflating metal beams
d. Seat bolsters
e. Reflective tires
Let’s wait for more updates when the concept is finally officially unveiled next week.
