Porsche: There Will Be No Smaller Cayenne

Amid the various reports about the possibility of a smaller version of the Cayenne SUV, Porsche has already denied the rumors. Instead, the automaker will be focusing more on the Cayenne, its strongest-selling model.

Despite the promises that a smaller model may offer, some Porsche insiders have told AutoCar that the company doesn’t want to take risks and encounter an experience similar with Audi—with the compact Q5 crossover snatching sales from the Q7. Though a smaller Cayenne would appeal to more people, it could possibly take away sales from the bigger model.

At present, 50% of the overall profit of Porsche is from the Cayenne SUV. A 2011 Cayenne model is due out sometime late in May.

Porsche Cayenne Diesel Gets an Upgrade from TechArt

The Porsche Cayenne Diesel recently got a boost. The popular Porsche tuner TechArt has developed a performance upgrade and an aerodynamic kit for the said SUV to give it more power and an improved style.

The performance upgrade increases the output of the vehicle’s 3.0-liter diesel engine by 50 horsepower (from 240 hp to 290 hp) and ups its torque output from 405 lb-ft to 465 lb-ft. From 8.3 seconds, the auto now boasts of 0-60 mph time in 7.7 seconds. And, all these are done without negative effects to the Cayenne’s fuel economy and emissions.

On the area of style, TechArt now offers the Aerokit 1 package that gives the Cayenne varied add-ons—from a deeper front spoiler and deeper sills to additional cooling vents, a vehicle-lowering suspension control module, and 21-inch alloy wheels.

PRESS RELEASE

TECHART launches performance and styling upgrades for Porsche Cayenne Diesel
combining low CO2 and low running costs with style and high performance, for new and existing vehicles.

A range of tuning and styling options for the Cayenne Diesel has been introduced by TECHART, the German Porsche tuning company renowned for creating some of the world’s finest bespoke vehicles. Upgrades covering everything from sports-orientated engine and chassis conversions to luxury interiors and aerodynamic styling are available in the UK from Porsche specialist Tech9 Motorsport.

“With the top three podium positions at Le Mans won by diesel powered racecars this year, it is proven beyond any doubt that this is a superb fuel for very high performance motoring,” says Phil Hindley, managing director of Tech9 Motorsport. “Add in their low CO2 output, which translates to low benefit-in-kind taxation, their excellent fuel economy and high residual values, and we can see why there is so much excitement about this car.”

TECHART’s upgrade range has been developed to provide subtle enhancements to power, handling and styling, complemented by a range of interior trim options that can take the vehicle from comfortable to opulent. Every component is designed and manufactured to the same high standards as the original equipment parts and integration with the vehicle is rigorously engineered to ensure that safety and durability remain at the very high levels originally specified by Porsche.

Specially developed for the Cayenne Diesel, Aerokit 1 includes a new front panel with a deeper front spoiler, elegantly integrated driving and fog lamps and additional cooling vents to help keep temperatures under control during consistently hard driving. Deeper sills help manage under body airflow and at the rear a new apron with integrated diffuser completes the underbody aerodynamics. Airflow behind the vehicle is managed by a low drag roof spoiler. All exterior styling components are manufactured from polyurethane to ensure long term durability and to provide a smooth, high quality appearance.

For cars fitted with air suspension, Aerokit 1 also includes a unique TECHART suspension control module that lowers the vehicle, reducing roll and further improving aerodynamics. When the vehicle is stationary, the control system lowers the vehicle a little more to improve access and to further improve the low, aerodynamic look.

Aerokit 1 also adds headlight and rearlight surround trims, 21″ alloy wheels fitted with Michelin Diamaris 4X4 XL 295/35 R21 tyres, twin double oval exhaust pipes, a three-spoke TECHART sports steering wheel with the correct Porsche airbag, and interior trim upgrades that include light-weight aluminium pedals and footrest and leather edged luxury logo floormats. Further options include 22″ body colour wheels with 295/30 R22 Continental tyres, an Aero or Turbo-look bonnet, plus a vast range of interior options from individual trim components to sumptuous full leather interiors created at TECHART’s world-class coachworks in Stuttgart.

To complement the body and interior upgrades, owners can specify TECHART’s TA 055/D1 power kit, which boosts the power of the Cayenne’s 3.0 litre diesel engine from 176 kW (240 bhp) to 213 kW (290 bhp) and takes torque from 550 Nm to 630 Nm at 2,200 rpm. More than 500 Nm is available from around 1,100rpm to beyond 4,000rpm, providing tremendous flexibility and refinement. CO2 emissions are unchanged at 244 g/km and fuel consumption on the combined cycle is an excellent 30.4 mpg.

Tech9’s Phil Hindley says that the Powerkit makes the Cayenne Diesel effortlessly quick. “The 0-60 time drops from 8.3 seconds to 7.7 seconds, an impressive improvement, but the real benefit is that the huge torque and very flat delivery provides impressive acceleration from any speed. It feels more like a big V8 than a highly efficient diesel V6.”

Owners who have chosen the Powerkit can enhance engine bay aesthetics by specifying the TECHART engine styling pack, which includes a carbon fibre engine cover with red embellishments and a metalised TECHART logo.

Tech9 can supply a new TECHART Diesel Cayenne with Aerokit 1 (including the exterior and interior upgrades) from £53,000 or from £55,500 with Aerokit 1 and Powerkit TA 055/D1. Existing vehicles can be fitted with Aerokit 1 from £15,000 and with Powerkit TA 055/D1 from £2,500. Both packs are available individually.

TECHART supplies powertrain, styling, interior and chassis enhancements for the full range of current and recent Porsches. The company was formed in 1987 to create vehicles that blend advanced technology with artistic excellence (hence TECHART) and is registered as an independent manufacturer. TECHART recently repeated its 2008 victory at the Tuner Grand Prix at Hockenheim, winning three classes in the June 2009 event, claiming overall victory and confirming the firm as the world’s leading developer of ultra-high performance tuned Porsches.

Tech9 Motorsport has an outstanding track record in Porsche racing, winning the British GT Championship in 2003, 2004 and 2005 and the FIA GT3 Championship in 2006. The firm’s technical expertise led to their appointment as exclusive UK agent for renowned German Porsche upgrade specialist TECHART, making a superb range of stylish body conversions, luxury interiors and high-performance mechanical conversions available to UK buyers.

Porsche Celebrates its 250,000th Cayenne

It’s a Porsche. It’s an SUV. It’s a diesel. It’s the Cayenne. And Porsche is celebrating right now because its 250,000th Cayenne has just rolled off the assembly line.

Read the press release below:

PRESS RELEASE:

The 250,000th Cayenne to roll off the line is a fuel-efficient diesel vehicle

Leipzig. Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, has today produced the 250,000th Cayenne at its Leipzig plant. The milestone vehicle is a white, 6-cylinder model with a diesel engine that will be delivered to a customer in Austria. The Cayenne, an sporty SUV, has been produced in Leipzig since 2002. “The introduction of the Cayenne as the third model in the series was an important strategic step for Porsche. The five-seater is not only a great addition to the range for our many long-term Porsche customers, but it also opens up to us an entirely new customer segment on international markets,” explains Dr. Wendelin Wiedeking, Chairman of the Board of Porsche AG. Thanks to its typical Porsche genes, the easy-to-handle Cayenne uniquely combines sportiness with robustness and absolute off-road capability.

Porsche has sold 150,000 vehicles worldwide from its first generation. Since the market launch of the second generation in February 2007, Porsche has been able to increase sales even further thanks to the vehicle’s fuel efficiency, higher drive performance, and improved drive-handling. For this reason the sports car manufacturer has also continued to expand production at the Leipzig location. In the 2007/08 fiscal year just expired Porsche was able to sell 45,478 units of the Cayenne series. Important Cayenne sales markets are, apart from Germany and the USA, the future markets of China, Russia, Latin America as well as the Middle East.

Today the Cayenne series is available in seven different models: The entry-level model comes with a 3.6-liter, six-cylinder engine with 290 HP (213 kW). The diesel model, which Porsche will unveil for the first time between March 5 - 15, 2009 at the Geneva International Motor Show (Automobilesalon), has a three-liter cubic capacity engine with 240 HP (176 kW) and has a fuel consumption of, on average, only 9.3 liters per 100 kilometers [25 mpg]. The more powerful S version is driven by an 8-cylinder engine with 4.8 liters cubic capacity with 385 HP (283 kW) while the Cayenne Turbo achieves a 500 HP (368 kW) performance. The leading model of this product line, the Cayenne Turbo S has a twin turbocharger with a 550 HP (404 kW) engine. The particularly athletic GTS model offers, in addition to its 405 HP (298 kW) powered 4.8-liter engine, a specially developed sports suspension and an accentuated dynamic design. The seventh model is the Cayenne S Transsyberia for on-road and off-road driving. The road version of the robust Cayenne Transsyberia rally car is based on the Cayenne S, however with the increased improved-performance engine model from the Cayenne GTS.

The most recent survey results from US market research institute J.D. Power rate the Cayenne for its excellent manufacturing quality and high reliability. Last year the renowned company surveyed 81,500 new car buyers in the USA on their satisfaction with the vehicle. The result: Porsche achieved the best ratings. The Cayenne customers surveyed were impressed by all aspects of their athletic SUV. This also applies to owners of older models: In used car analyses trade magazines confirm the Cayenne’s “fantastically low defect rates.” Even with high kilometer readings and engine stress, there were practically no engine and transmission damages, axle problems or worn-out steering. The early Cayenne vehicles from 2002/2003 have already covered distances of more than 300,000 kilometers, often on dirt roads and uneven terrain.
